Thesis Title: Tensor Product States, Quantum Many Body Systems, Statistical Mechanics

Peter Shor

About

I am interested in interacting quantum many body systems (QMBS). Our approach for efficiently describing their eigenstates has been via Matrix Product States (MPS) representation. For their energy distributions (with generic interactions), with Alan Edelman we have developed a theory (and a numerical scheme) that utilizes the tools of random matrix theory and free probability theory. Such spin systems in physics are known as Quantum Spin Glasses.

Other areas of amusement have been (classical) statistical mechanics of particles with long range interactions (e.g. galactic dynamics) and neuroscience. Reinhard Nesper and I developed a theory that describes why optical illusions are perceived as so.
